Today we learned about the first successful British colony in the New World: Jamestown. We started with a short clip from the Disney Film, Pocahontas. The clip shows the focus of the English as they arrived.
Students can watch the clip here: Mine, mine, mine If students haven't watched it yet, they should write down 5 observations and then what problems do you see happening based upon how the characters are acting?
We then read an article about Jamestown and the first year of the colony. Students were asked to read and annotate the article with close attention to details.
For homework: Write a summary of the Jamestown article. Then, in a separate paragraph, explain what the colonists should have done differently using your notes from the article.
