Week 2 of our Covid 19 Break - March 23 - 27

Welcome to week 2 of Direwolf US History online.

This week we have three lessons (following our normal structure where I see you three times a week).  All of the lessons are linked on this one post.  The lessons are: the Seminole War (which many of you already have some knowledge of from your Jackson research), the Missouri Compromise, and the Monroe Doctrine.

Lesson 1 - The Seminole War:

Please watch this video from EMS History

Then answer the following questions in an email to me: coonc001@hartfordschools.org (subject Seminole War)

  • Who were the Black Seminoles and where did they come from?
  • Why were the Black Seminoles a problem for America?
  • What did Jackson do against the Seminoles and why was that a problem?
  • What was the end result of the Seminole War?
  • Do you feel Jackson was justified in doing what he did?  Support your answer.

Lesson 2 - The Missouri Compromise

This lesson will have you do a short reading from USHistory.org and then view a seven slide PowerPoint.  If you can't view it in that format, you can get it here as a PDF.  As you do the reading and view the Powerpoint, think about America at the time, a nation already divided by the issue of slavery.  As we have discussed, slavery was not simply in the south, many northern states also allowed and had slaves.  Please answer this essential question after you have done the reading and viewed the Powerpoint.

  • How did the Missouri Compromise of 1820 attempt to settle the debate over the future of slavery in the growing American republic?
Please email your answer to me at coonc001@hartfordschools.org (subject Missouri Compromise)

Lesson 3 - The Monroe Doctrine

President James Monroe (who the Monrovia, Liberia is named after) was known for a policy called "The Monroe Doctrine".  Today we will be doing some reading analysis.   In the first document, Monroe in his own words, there is reading that asks you to note the Key Ideas followed by Vocabulary & Meanings, Significant Quotes and Interpretations, and Questions you still have.  Please put those answers into an email/word doc/google doc.  Title that section Monroe in his own words.

The second and third documents go together, the first is called Monroe Doctrine - Reading and Map.  This is a reading to do, the other is called Monroe Doctrine - Reading Analysis Questioning and Citing.  Please put those answers in the same document.  All three of these files are PDF so you should be able to easily view them.

Email that document to me at coonc001@hartfordschools.org (subject Monroe Doctrine).
